Range of vegetative structure  of Algae

·        Unicellular :-

Ø Motile               -    Chlamydomonas

Ø Non – Motile    -   Chlorella

·        Multicellular :-

v Colonial :-

Ø  Motile    (fix number of cells, motile colony) -   Volvox  (spherical), Gonium ( Plate like)

Ø Non-Motile (unfix number of cells, coccoid colony)-   Hydrodictyon

v   Aggregation (unfix colony of cells)

Ø Palmelloid form -  Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Euglena viridis, Euglena stellate and Tetraspora

Ø Dendroid colony - Prasinocladus

v Filamentous :-

Ø Unbranched    -   Ulothrix , Spirogyra

Ø Branched         -   Cladophora

Ø Hetrotrichous  -   Draparnaldiopsis, Coleochaete

v Pseudoparenchymatous (Some algae appear to be parenchymatous but are actually made up of interwoven filaments. These are called pseudoparenchymatous algae)

Ø Uniaxial          -    Polysiphonia

Ø Multiaxial       -    Nemalion

v Well - developed Parenchymatous :-

Ø Sheet – like     -   Ulva ( sea lettuce)

Ø Tubular            -   Enteromorpha

ü  Chara, Fucus, and Laminaria are examples of parenchymatous algae.

v Siphonous  ( Tubular, without septa, multinucleated )

Ø Vaucheria

v Rhizopodial Forms -   Chrysidiostum (Chrysophyceae).

v A stem-like portion called a stipe and leafy appendages (called “fronds” ) found in

Ø  Sargassum
